Melrose at the Beach – Update!

There will be a soft opening of the Beach Club on Memorial Day weekend. There will be tours, information, and food provided to the public, and a separate area set aside for current members. There is water in both pools, the new logo on the bottom of the large pool, and construction is well underway on the privacy fence (insurance regulations and a need to control access, don’t you know) which looks like it will blend in very nicely

The old fitness center will be a spa, and the new fitness center will be where the children’s area used to be. In addition to indoor and outdoor dining, a gazebo, fire pit, and special facilities for members will be in place according to Pelorus.

Pelorus hopes to complete Jack’s within 60 days of Beach Club completion. The plan is for a “full service” restaurant, the pro shop, a special area for women, outdoor movies at night, etc. By the way, they plan to use a “swipe card” system for access to amenities like the pool and to speed up your transactions in the retail outlets. Sounds like they’re moving toward a “cashless” operation.

Now this is “BIG”, Pelorus has entered into a transportation LLC (that includes Bloody Point) and will provide service starting in mid-July between Daufuskie, Savannah, and Hilton Head. The LLC is called GSM (for Georgia, South Carolina Maritime) and with clean-up work well underway at the Melrose Landing, you might assume that will be the docking point.

The plan is to allow only electric carts and bikes on the ocean side road along the beach. In fact, they prefer to allow only electric carts and needed service vehicles inside Melrose – which matches the long-standing position of the Melrose POA.

And lastly, the plans call for the creation of a “general store” in one of the second row beach cottages that previously housed administrative activities.

“Spring Breakers” Arrive on Daufuskie Island

It began as it often does with the sudden arrival of “spring breakers” invading the beaches along the east coast, including Daufuskie Island. The boys, full of themselves as usual, waiting in the surf for the girls to make their way out of the Atlantic. And then, as you walk the beach in the morning you find them still . . . well, hooked together, as the female horseshoe crabs drag the males over the nests to fertilize the eggs. What were you thinking??

These harmless creatures have evolved little in over 4 million (yes MILLION) years, yet are so vital to our health and the ecosystem. You see, horseshoe crab eggs provide a major food source for birds migrating from Antarctica to the Arctic where they will nest and raise their young.

And, their copper-based blood is critical to our pharmaceutical industry in ensuring the sterility of almost all of our intravenous drugs – without which we would not be able to treat so many people effectively.

Daufuskie Island’s “Melrose on the Beach” Beginning To Take Shape

Pelorus Group, owners of the resort amenities in Melrose, is beginning to make serious progress toward reopening many of the amenities that have been shuttered for the better part of two years.

With a crew of over twenty people in constant motion, the Beach Club is being prepared for a Memorial Day Weekend Opening. Each of the pools is being resurfaced, a decorative /privacy fence will be installed around the pool complex, the restaurant and bar are being renovated and improved, and the bathrooms in the fitness center will be rebuilt. The beach area in front of the Beach Club has been cleaned up making a beautiful transition from the surf to the Club.

We’ll keep you posted on Pelorus’ plans for a membership program, but expect the pools, a restaurant and the tennis courts to join the Nicklaus Signature Melrose Golf Course and the Equestrian Center as “open for business” this spring!! This is great news for property owners and vacationers alike, providing a family-centered venue that adds value for everyone visiting Melrose.

Oh, and by the way, the center section of the Melrose Inn has been gutted to create one large open area and the architects have begun the process of redesigning a new, up-to-date Melrose Inn lobby. No dates for construction yet, but stay tuned.

In celebration of Earth Day, Daufuskie Island Conservancy, an organization committed to protecting Daufuskie Island’s natural environment, will be hosting a brunch at the Haig Point Clubhouse on Sunday April 22 from 10:30am – 2pm. This event will include a live and silent auction and a presentation by guest speaker Todd Ballantine on Connecting Nature and Human Nature.

Todd Ballantine is an environmental scientist and author of “Tideland Treasure” who also has a wide range of abilities which help him to both educate the American public on the environment as well as take the lead in planning many environmental preservation and restoration projects. Discussion topics will include The Difference Between a Large and Small Island, Island Life is a J-Curve, Nature Never Lies, and Six Steps for Building an Even Better Daufuskie and will “encourage us to explore and make wise, long-term solutions for the Low-country environment”.

Eagle’s Nest Restaurant is Busy, Busy, Busy and So Is The Service And Food

Good things are always happening on Daufuskie Island, SC! Opened now for just six months, The Eagle’s Nest Restaurant at Bloody Point is very busy – so busy in fact, that owners Patrick and Tai have had to revamp their current reservation system for dinner services. Parties of 1-6 will now be serviced on a first come, first served basis, and reservations for parties of 8-12 will now have a choice of 2 seating times, 5:30 and 7:45. Monday Pizza Nights , Thursday Pasta Nights, and Sunday All Day Breakfast continue to be a favorite of both locals and visitors, as do the monthly cooking classes with Chef Jay.

Easter Brunch Buffet on April 8 would be a great time to plan a visit and enjoy the ambiance and fabulous food at The Eagle’s Nest Restaurant at Bloody Point. Bike Tour of Daufuskie Island

Saturday, March 31st, Haig Point will host one leg of a bike tour of Daufuskie Island. The cyclists are from a Hilton Head biking club comprised of area doctors, lawyers, retirees and other professionals. They will come from Freeport through our South Gate, ride along Haig Point Road to the Strachan Mansion, then to the Lighthouse, where they will proceed down the Beach Road to Freeport Drive and back to Haig Point Road before exiting out the South Gate.

We expect between 50 and 70 cyclists from 9:30 am until 2:30 pm. As this is not a race, we expect most bikers will be in groups of three to four and there should be little impact on your daily activities. Please welcome and wave as our guests tour our beautiful corner of Daufuskie. Please be on the lookout for bikes, as it is unusual for Haig Point to have this many touring guests on one day.

Time Once Again For The RBC Heritage

South Carolina’s only PGA Tour event is back April 9 – 15 with the RBC Heritage. This popular tradition began back in 1969 when Sea Pines developer Charles Fraser was working to make Hilton Head a household name. Is there really no bridge to the island?
There is no bridge connecting Daufuskie Island to the mainland. There are also several private companies that provide high speed water taxi services to the island and places around the island to dock your own boat. Are there really no cars on the island?
Although there are some cars here, most of the island’s roads are unpaved and traffic-free. The preferred method of transportation to get about the island is golf cart, bicycle, or by foot.

What kind of emergency services are available on the island?
Daufuskie has 24/7 Fire Fighter Coverage with a fully staffed fire department and volunteer firefighter network, as well as 24/7 EMS coverage. For less serious injuries a water taxi takes you to Hilton Head Island where an ambulance will transport to its hospital; for severe emergencies, a Life Flight helicopter transports to Savannah Memorial, a level 1 trauma ER, in 7 minutes.

Where do you get groceries?
There is a small general store that carries mostly staples, but there are no grocery stores on Daufuskie Island, so some planning is necessary. There are also grocery services available on Hilton Head that will do your shopping for you and Haig Point offers a grocery service to its’ owners and guests where groceries are delivered and brought to your door.

What about eating out?
There are three restaurants located on the island: The Eagles Nest restaurant located in the Club House at Bloody Point Golf Club offers eclectic contemporary fare, The Old Daufuskie Crab Company located at the Freeport Marina features indoor and outdoor bars that allow you to sit under the gazebo and enjoy the beautiful views over the marina, and Marshside Mama’s, with a daily menu that includes the freshest of fish from the local fishermen’s catch of the day. Restaurants located in Harbour Town in Hilton Head are a quick ride via water taxi and are a short walk from the water taxi landing.
