Daufuskie Island's Rob Kennedy Trail Share

Daufuskie Island
has a rich history that dates back to before the Revolutionary War and was, until recently, home to a significant population of native Gullah and Geechee inhabitants, descendants of freed slaves who settled on the island after the Civil War. The entire island of Daufuskie is on the National Register of Historic Places and The Rob Kennedy Trail is a self-guided tour that highlights 20 historic landmarks on the island. A few of the spots you will visit along the trail are:

Mt. Carmel Baptist Church - Billie Burn Museum: The first church having been destoryed by a hurricane, this building was built soon after. Now used to house the Billie Burn museum, it contains artifacts of island history.

Tabby Ruins: Historically used to construct buildings in the lowcountry, tabby is a mixture of ground oyster shells, sand, and water, and is very durable. Parts of original tabby structures on Daufuskie Island can be explored here.

Haig Point: You will find the Haig Point Lighthouse, tabby ruins, and a Gullah cemetary here.

First Union African Baptist Church: One of the Island's oldest buildings it is still used as a place of worship today.

The tour finishes up at Bloody Point Lighthouse: A two-story building that guided ships through the Savannah River Channel from 1833-1922, and the Silver Dew Winery, the building that was used to store kerosene for the lighthouse.

Today Daufuskie Island offers residents and visitors alike a rich and unique blend of history and modern conveniences, while still holding on to echoes from the past.
